BIM and standardization in railway infrastructure

Explore the importance of BIM in the digitalisation of railway infrastructure, and how we have made progress in using BIM in construction projects.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is important for the digitalisation of railway infrastructure. We use BIM in large and medium-sized development projects, but also in an increasing number of smaller projects.

Bane NOR is involved in the development of international standards, particularly within the railway domain of buildingSMART International.

Information meeting on BIM and geodata in Bane NOR - 21 November 2025

The BIM and Geomatics Department invites you to an information meeting on BIM and geomatics on 21 November at Bane NOR's premises in Schweigaardsgate 33 in Oslo. There is also the opportunity to participate digitally on teams. Registration is now closed.

Future processes and deliverables

We also focus on the delivery of model-based projects for operation and maintenance, especially to our maintenance database Banedata.

We have standardized what information is to be delivered for all development projects, and are now looking at automating the flow of information between our systems.

The first version of the requirements document for properties on objects when handing over models for operation and maintenance can be downloaded here:

The requirements consist of a requirements document and requirements for object properties such as PDF files and Excel files. We have chosen to include both formats
so that it is possible for our suppliers to build up automated processes if they wish.

We also collaborate with the operations organization to clarify the use of models in operation and maintenance tasks.

The use of BIM has been a priority at Bane NOR since the start of the InterCity project in 2014, and it has been decided that models will be used in all projects in all planning phases.

Bane NOR is active in buildingSMART and is a board member of buildingSMART Norway. We plan to use properties from standardized data templates in the future.

From autumn 2023, we require that all new model-based projects are delivered in IFC format.

Information modelling requirements

We have also developed our own information standard called Information Modelling Requirements (KIM).

We collaborate with Statsbygg and use the same requirements database, BIMQ, to standardize information about objects in the model. The goal is to automate receipt control of models.

Nordic road and rail co-operation on BIM

Together with six other public road and rail developers, Bane NOR has a Nordic BIM collaboration. This consists of the following organizations:

  • Banedanmark (Denmark)
  • The Danish Road Directorate (Denmark)
  • Väylävirasto (Finland)
  • Bane NOR (Norway)
  • Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Norway)
  • Nye Veier (Norway)
  • Swedish Transport Administration (Sweden)

This year, this collaboration is launching its first annual report, which shows the status of a number of key BIM teams and processes.
